Master of Traumatology – The University of Newcastle

Australia’s only online post-graduate trauma program

“Lots of thoughtful lectures by world-class experts. Anecdotes and experiences from the front line with frank explorations of “what the book says” versus ‘what works in real life’. Changed my practice.”

– Ben Hardy, Master of Traumatology graduate

  • Learn from over 100 world-leaders in trauma management & research
  • Manage patients in line with the most recent evidence
  • Accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS)

The Master of Traumatology program is the first of its kind in Australia, and one of only two worldwide. It offers the opportunity to gain a postgraduate qualification from The University of Newcastle’s prestigious School of Medicine and Public Health – recently ranked in the top 150 schools in the world for Medicine (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2016).

Professor Zsolt Balogh, Trauma Surgeon, researcher, and Director of one of Australia’s busiest Trauma Units, convenes the program. Professor Balogh has designed the program for health professionals working in trauma care so that it combines formalisation of clinical experience with a postgraduate coursework qualification.

The program will improve a practitioner’s candidature for further vocational training, while providing an advanced educational foundation for doctors, nurses, paramedics and allied health professionals as they specialise in Trauma Management. Graduates will build their career with the most relevant and up to date knowledge and skills in the management of trauma and the function of trauma systems internationally.

The Master of Traumatology program comprises 8 online courses which can either be completed in 1 year or studied part-time:

  • Introduction to Trauma Care
  • Post-injury Critical Care
  • Torso Trauma
  • Musculoskeletal Trauma
  • Neurotrauma
  • Epidemiology and Biostatistics
  • Research Protocol Design
  • Trauma in Austere Environment

Students are also required to attend a 3-day on-campus workshop in Newcastle at the end of the program.
